ಬ್ರಿಡ್ಜ್‌ಟೌನ್‌(ಜು.03): ವೆಸ್ಟ್‌ಇಂಡೀಸ್‌ನ ಮಾಜಿ ಕ್ರಿಕೆಟಿಗ ಸರ್‌.ಎವರ್ಟನ್ ವೀಕ್ಸ್‌ ಬುಧವಾರ ನಿಧನರಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅವರಿಗೆ 95 ವರ್ಷ ವಯಸ್ಸಾಗಿತ್ತು.
ವಿಂಡೀಸ್‌ನ ದಿಗ್ಗಜ ಬ್ಯಾಟ್ಸ್‌ಮನ್‌ಗಳ ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಥಾನ ಪಡೆದಿದ್ದ ವೀಕ್ಸ್‌ 1948ರಲ್ಲಿ ಟೆಸ್ಟ್‌ ಕ್ರಿಕೆಟ್‌ಗೆ ಪಾದಾರ್ಪಣೆ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರು. ಅದೇ ವರ್ಷ ಸತತ 5 ಶತಕಗಳನ್ನು ಬಾರಿಸಿ ವಿಶ್ವದಾಖಲೆ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದರು. ಜಮೈಕಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಂಗ್ಲೆಂಡ್ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಎವರ್ಟನ್(141) ಚೊಚ್ಚಲ ಶತಕ ಬಾರಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಇದಾದ ಬಳಿಕ ಭಾರತ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಕ್ರಮವಾಗಿ 128, 194, 162 ಹಾಗೂ 101 ರನ್ ಚಚ್ಚುವ ಮೂಲಕ ವಿಶ್ವದಾಖಲೆ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದರು.

48 ಟೆಸ್ಟ್‌ಗಳನ್ನು ಆಡಿದ್ದ ವೀಕ್ಸ್‌, 58.61ರ ಸರಾಸರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ 4455 ರನ್ ಗಳಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಗಾಯದ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಯಿಂದಾಗಿ ಅವರ ವೃತ್ತಿಜೀವನ ಬೇಗ ಅಂತ್ಯವಾಯಿತು. ದಿಗ್ಗಜ ಆಟಗಾರನ ನಿಧನಕ್ಕೆ ಕ್ರಿಕೆಟ್ ಜಗತ್ತು ಕಂಬನಿ ಮಿಡಿದಿದೆ. ಅನಿಲ್ ಕುಂಬ್ಳೆ, ವಿವಿಎಸ್ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ್ ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ಹಲವು ಕ್ರಿಕೆಟಿಗರು ಎವರ್ಟನ್ ನಿಧನಕ್ಕೆ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಜಾಲತಾಣಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ಸಂತಾಪ ಸೂಚಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
